Humble Beginnings

I’ve been thinking about blogging lately.

How do I make A Fresh Voice better? The age old question of what should I write. Should I add a new series to the blog? How does my site look to readers? Is it clean and polished? When contemplating these questions, sometimes I end up reflecting on how I got started writing.

My blogging beginning didn’t start on WordPress.

I didn’t have a dedicated name or a target audience. I didn’t understand the intricacies of blogging. I just wanted to write about what’s on my heart which is somewhat similar to today. Want to know where I started blogging?

MySpace.

I know that dates me, but MySpace was the hottest thing going in 2005-07. While I built my personal page, blogging became an essential part of it. I didn’t know it at the time but writing my thoughts down, and posting them for the MySpace world to see, shaped me as a blogger. I gained support from my friends. I almost lost a dear friend (relationship drama). All because words have power.

I remember being pretty candid and very rough around the edges back then. If you think I don’t mince words now, then this is nothing. I definitely didn’t bite my tongue as a twenty-something college kid. I’ve since learned that you don’t want to offend your readers (although I’m fairly sure I’ve still done that. At least it’s more refined now).

As everyone began the great social media migration of 2008 (i.e. they switched to Facebook), blogging was a lost art for me. Facebook had a platform to write notes, but I wasn’t really into it. However, whenever a social issue arose I would address via conversation with random people. Eventually, I started writing longer statuses about different subjects. Unbeknownst to me, I was making my way back into blogging.

By now blogging had grown exponentially since the days of MySpace. People understood Search Engine Optimization (SEO), how to monetize your blog, target audiences, the specific niche of your blog (i.e. food, photo, or travel), and other various blogging subject matter. Me? I’m just here to write.

Me? I’m just here to write.

A Fresh Voice is not huge in the least. Not that I know of anyway. My goal is to touch whoever reads. If that’s one person, then I’ve done my job. I’ve come a long way as a writer/blogger. I endeavor to continue forward.

Join me on this journey!
